Employability skills created through our student ambassador programme
At Oxford International Education Group (OIEG), students are at the core of everything we do. We are passionate about education and providing students with the best experience that will enrich their studies and future careers. Our students are our best advocates, we’ve caught up with some of them to talk about their experiences as International Student Ambassadors, and how their role has positively impacted their future employment opportunities.
Our student ambassadors are representatives of our International Colleges and our University partners to prospective students, and our wider community. Our Bangor University student ambassador, Moneeb, explains how being a Student Ambassador has helped boost his CV:
“I chose to study overseas to explore the diverse opportunities of international education and to learn the personal and professional skills that will benefit my career. Being a student ambassador has allowed me to represent my university and my culture, and to engage with people from around the world. I’ve had many opportunities to promote Bangor University International College and help students, partners and colleagues to truly engage with the university by sharing my experiences.
Through my ambassador work with OIEG, I’ve learned many things and discovered a lot about myself. The development of soft skills such as communication, listening, public speaking and self-confidence will benefit me for many years to come. The chance to regularly hone my skills will also help me in my future career and give me confidence when applying for work.”
The development of professional and workplace skills helps to prepare our students to launch their careers. Providing work experience opportunities for students builds their skills and confidence and places them in an environment for growth. Our ambassador Moses, from De Montfort University International College, is confident the experience has been valuable for his future career prospects:
“The skills I have learnt go a long way in helping me prepare for my career. I’ve developed communication and teamwork skills, customer service, problem-solving, organisation and creativity. These skills are critical for my future career in computing and in multicultural workplaces.”
Providing students with the opportunity to build and equip themselves with some of the skills they’ll require in their future careers is important to us. When our student ambassadors represent OIEG, they not only gain valuable work experience but also plug themselves into our network, connecting with professionals who can open future career opportunities. As Moneeb says:
“Although being an international ambassador is a voluntary occupation, it’s provided me the chance to work and network with professionals in many industries. I’ve built relationships and connections with businesses, employers and my fellow students, who will become the launching pad for my first professional network. Being an ambassador has opened so many doors, and I know will continue to do so in the future.”
And open doors it has. Moneeb has demonstrated the skills, care, passion, and enthusiasm that fits with us at OIEG and has recently begun working with our online education brand OI Digital Institute. He is uniquely placed to use his own experience to support the next generation of students and kick off his own career.
His experience, care and passion for students and the soft skills he’s developed in his role as a student ambassador pair nicely with his new role at OI Digital Institute, helping his team to deliver on business goals.
