Most popular part time student jobs
Studying doesn’t come cheap – and neither does student life. If you’re a student and you’re looking to earn a little money alongside your student loan, scholarship or grants, you may want to consider working a part time position. Of course, when you have lectures, seminars, workshops and other study sessions each day, you’re going to need to find a flexible role that doesn’t interfere with your university work. Some positions are better suited to this than others, which makes them particularly popular with students. Here are a few that you might want to take into consideration.
Bar Staff
Most student communities have plenty of bars in them. Of course, these bars need to be staffed. If you’re comfortable interacting with people in a pretty social position, bar work could work well around your studies. Shifts are often in the evenings, on the night and over weekends, which tends to coincide well with study timetables.
Restaurant and Cafe Staff
In a similar vein, positions within restaurants and cafes tend to be popular with students too. Again, work is more in demand during the evenings and over weekends, which tend to be the times that students are free. Most restaurants and cafes will offer basic training in skills such as how to make coffees and how to carry multiple plates and other dishes.
Dog Walker / Pet Sitter
If you’re fond of pets and have experience looking after them, you could find that dog walking or pet sitting are ideal positions for you. This is flexible work that you can arrange around your student life and you get to spend some quality time with other people’s furry and feathered friends.
Brand Ambassador
Brand ambassadors work on promotional campaigns and tend to work on a campaign by campaign basis. Usually, you’ll be working in a public space and your role will involve being able to talk to members about the brand you’re representing. You may be asked to collect data, hand out leaflets or complete other activities throughout your shift.
Tour Guide
Are you studying in a location that hosts a lot of tourists? Get to know in-depth information about the area and you could make the perfect tour guide. This is an enjoyable role and often allows you to spend more time outdoors.
Freelance Creative
If you have a creative skill – for example, if you’re a good writer, or if you can do a little graphic design – you can always register as self-employed, become your own boss and start completing freelance projects for clients. This is great, as you choose what projects you accept, meaning you won’t find yourself overworked or with clashing schedules. Just remember to take your own tax and national insurance contributions out of your pay.
Of course, there are countless more part time roles that you may want to consider while being a student. But those listed above are some of the most popular! What will best suit you will depend entirely on your individual needs and preferences. If anything above has sparked your interest, start searching for open roles in your area online!
